Why offer responsible products?
If you have not heard the news yesterday about infant furniture I would like to share it with you. It's not a panic situation, although it is cause for concern. There is a new study released yesterday, a study of cribs and changing tables found in stores such as Target, Wal-Mart and Babies "R" Us. A half-dozen baby products, out of 21 tested, emitted formaldehyde at levels high enough to trigger allergy and asthma attacks in children. The report also pointed out that no government agency tests items given to children for such possible off-gassing. Baby furniture won't guarantee allergies or asthma, but it could raise the risk in the infants by up to 39 percent. The worst offender was a oak crib, from a manufacturer I will not name, that was partially made out of particle board. The problem for parents is that it is not easy to tell by looking; one crib that had safe levels of formaldehyde is almost identical to the one that puts out five times the amount doctors believe is safe.
Formaldehyde has been classified as an air contaminant and carcinogen for some time, and according to the Sacramento Bee, the California Environmental Protection Agency has "basically said there's no safe level."
