Greenwashing 101

What is greenwashing?

Let's look at the the internet says and Wikipedia says it best -

"Greenwashing (a portmanteau of green and whitewash) is a term that is used to describe the act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product or service. The term Green sheen has similarly been used to describe organizations which attempt to appear that they are adopting practices beneficial to the environment."

This should come at no surprise and it happening all over the place. The worst offense, in my biased opinion, is calling cotton a natural fiber or marketing it as a natural product in the hopes of jumping on the green movement bandwagon. While, yes, it is a natural fiber but it also uses massive amounts of chemicals. To put it bluntly there are currently 1000's of lives that are lost per year due to the direct exposure to chemicals during the farming of cotton. While this cannot be solved overnight purchasing only organic cotton will eventually solve it. So the first rule of thumb is natural does not equal chemical free and does not equal good.
